Enteromonas hominis trophozoite 9 - 10 x 6 microns in faecal specimen (TEM). NB There were 3 anterior flagella and 1 posterior flagella extending free posteriorly or laterally, though not all visible in this photo. There is one nucleus but no cytostome or axostyle. They were from a specimen from a 49 year old male with history of chronic diarrhoea following a trip to India. They were present in 3 stool samples presented over a 3 week period. Also present were Blastocystis hominis and Enteromonas cysts. No pathogenic organisms were isolated and the cause of his symptoms was not identified, although Blastocystis may have been the cause- its pathogenicity has not been established. Enteromonas are often not reported because of their small size and if not examined fresh ? within 30 minutes of collection or fixed fresh, they disintegrate and also because of the difficulties in identification under LM (see 1 08). They are considered non-pathogenic but are little studied. EM was performed on this specimen to assist in identification. (EM by Deb Stenzel)
